Many mommies complain, about constipation problem in their children. There might be many factors responsible for causing this problem like illness, de- hydration, and lack of physical activity. It’s treatable and home remedies help treating it. If your child is 1 year old or older than this, you can always try to home remedies for treating constipation problem.

Common symptoms of constipation in children are:
Difficulty or pain while passing the stools.
When child’s stools are very hard.
Stools have blood or of different colour.
Loss of appetite/ poor appetite.
Less often passing stools.
Often complains of pain in tummy.

There are simple things which are easy to incorporate in your child’s routine to avoid constipation, like drinking more water, playing outdoors. Home remedies help to get relief from constipation and avoid it .Following are tried and workable home remedies for children having constipation.

1. More fibres


Having more dietary fibres is necessary to avoid constipation. Some simple changes you can easily make in your child’s diet for including more fibres:

  1. Give more green leafy vegetables to a child. Make fenugreek leaves, spinach leaves paratha instead of plain chapatti.
  2. Give fruit pieces instead of fruit juice to a child.
  3. After 1 year of age avoid giving purees of vegetables /fruits to child. Instead give boiled and diced vegetables.
  4. Avoid bakery products like bread/cakes/pastries (Made using all-purpose flour, processed foods)
  5. Give pear puree for babies and pear slices for older kids. Pear has natural laxatives.
  6. Avoid giving excessive sweets, carbonated drinks.
  7. Give ripe banana to eat.

2. Physical exercise


Lack of physical activity can be the main reason of constipation in children. Nowadays children are more stick to screens and seating whole day. Physical activities like running, cycling will help children to improve overall digestion. Encourage your child to play outdoor regularly be a role model and play with them.

3. Raisins


Black raisins work for treating constipation. For using raisins soak those in water overnight crush it in morning. Give raisins crushed water to drink to your child.

4. Prune juice


Prune juice is very helpful in treating constipation. You can use ready-made prune juice available in the market. Mix it with water and add sugar or honey as a sweetener if required. Give this prune juice to your child.

5. Figs


Figs have high amount of dietary fibres which help relieving in constipation. For using figs soak them in water overnight and give water and crushed fig in the morning.

6. Probiotic


Curd has natural good bacteria which aid digestion. So Include curd, butter milk, yoghurt in your kids diet.

7. Massaging on tummy


Constipation causes pain in tummy for kids.Massage on their tummies in circular direction.As massaging tummy helps to relief from stomach wind. Regular massage on tummies helps kids get relief in pain caused by constipation.
