This south indian variety of rice is something which has irresistible taste and my favorite since childhood. I like tamarind rice /Puliyogare for its tangy and spicy taste .But being raised in maharastrian family i didn’t get chance to taste this rice often.This rice is offered to god as prasadam in on festivals and many temples also has it as a main menu.When i started cooking i tried making tamarind rice first and i could never reach the taste which actual authentic tamarind rice has.
After innumerable number of trial and errors now i could make tamarind rice which is nearby taste of authentic recipe.Tamarind rice can be offered to breakfast or lunch.Serve with papad and any side dish.Today i’m posting this Puliyogare /tamarind rice recipe ,give a try to it ans i’m sure you’ll like it too.
Wash and Soak tamarind in cup of water .
Extract thick pulp from soaked tamarind .Take a juice from tamarind pulp and keep it aside.
Cook rice with 1 cup of water till its cooked.Make sure rice should not get mushy.
Dry roast Sesame seeds ,Coriander seeds ,fenugreek seeds and grind it in grinder to get fine spice powder.This spice powder can be used for many days for making this rice variety.
Heat oil in kadhai and add mustard and cumin seeds to splutter.
Add pinch of asafoetida in oil and add whole red chilies in it.
Add bengal gram and black gram in kadhai and saute till dal gets roasted.
Add thick tamarind juice in kadhai and mix well.Let it cook for 8-9 minutes.
Add ground spice powder made in above step to tamarind pulp and mix well.
Add salt , jagery turmeric powder in tamarind mixture and cook while stirring till oil starts separating from the it.
Once the tamarind mixture gets ready switch off the gas and spread cooked rice in big plate.
Pour tamarind mixture on the rice and mix well.
Yummy, tangy and spice tamarind rice is ready to serve.Serve it with papad for lunch or breakfast.
